Every Quilt Tells a Story

I grew up wrapped in quilts that told stories. My mother, a gifted and artistic seamstress, made them for every chapter of my life: a twin bed in childhood, a dorm room far from home, cozy evenings on the couch. She stitched beauty and care into everything she made, from handmade Halloween costumes to matching dresses for the two of us. At the time, I resisted the sewing lessons she gently insisted on. But now, as a mother to two daughters, I carry her legacy forward with every quilt I make.

That love of fabric and making runs deep in my family. On both sides of my dad’s family, my great-grandparents worked to create beautiful things — or made it possible for others to do so. The Federated Clothing stores in San Francisco proudly carried “the mark of the Shragge quality” on every label, while my great-grandparents in Lodi were known across the San Joaquin Valley for The Fabric Shop, a place where people came to find fabric for curtains, bedding, clothing, and, of course, quilts.

Fog & Thread is rooted in that legacy — the idea that a quilt is more than fabric and thread. It is a source of warmth, beauty, and connection. I draw inspiration from fabrics, patterns, and the emotions they evoke — how a quilt will feel draped across a bed, folded on a sofa, or wrapped around someone you love. Each design begins with the intention that it will be used, loved, and lived with, not tucked away, but part of the rhythms of home.

Based in Oakland, California, Fog & Thread is a reflection of the quiet beauty of everyday life — thoughtful design, careful craftsmanship, and pieces meant to be cherished and used for years to come.

Each piece is created by hand, with care and intention. Whether it becomes the backdrop of bedtime stories or a quiet companion on your sofa, my hope is that it brings comfort and a sense of home, just as my mother’s quilts always have.

Thank you for being here.

Warmly,
Katie

About me…

I learned to sew in middle school when my mom enrolled me in a class. My first quilt was purple, green, and black — bold choices that still make me smile. I wish I still had it! Sewing took a back seat for many years as sports and teenage life filled my time, but the pull of fabric and thread eventually found its way back to me.

After my daughters, Gemma and Poppy, were born, I started sorting through their baby clothes and felt the urge to make something meaningful out of the ones I couldn’t part with. Before I dared cut into those precious fabrics, I decided to practice sewing again. I found an adorable fabric shop on Piedmont Avenue in Oakland, near my home, and picked out some prints to experiment with. That “practice” quilt became the Songbird Quilt — and it completely reignited my love for quilting.

Since then, I’ve made a dozen or so quilts and have taken classes to learn every step of the process. Now, I finally feel ready to share my work with the world. I’m especially excited about creating custom quilts — choosing fabrics, designing patterns, and stitching together stories that will be cherished for years to come.

Where I Find My Fabrics

Every quilt begins with fabric — the texture, the color, the way it feels in your hands. I love supporting local shops here in the Bay Area, where I often find the prints and solids that inspire new designs. I also bring home fabric from my travels, letting each place leave its mark in the form of a quilt.

The result is a mix of materials that feel rooted in place and memory — cloth that carries a story before it’s even stitched. By the time a quilt is finished, it already holds layers of meaning.
